Passion Vs. Profit

Thanks to a thread at the warrior forum<Clicky>, I’ve been contemplating the place passion has is your marketing business. The oft repeated debate goes something like:

Person 1: Build your business around your hobbies and interests-your passions will drive your business!

Person 2: Look for viable markets chock full of customers. Sell things to these customers!

So who’s right? The problem is there isn’t a clear cut winner when it comes to results. I have gotten both sides of the argument from people I respect….people I would consider mentors.

The way I see it, the only way to solve the argument is to realize that there is no argument. There is no reason why both points of view can’t exist together-in fact, I’d like to suggest that fusing these arguments is the only way to find success.

It’s important, especially for new internet marketers, to pick a niche there interested in-the more passionate the better. There are a couple of reasons for this. For one, you need to start somewhere when it comes to brainstorming niche ideas. The first things you’ll generally think of are your own interests. It’s just easier to start with that sort of list.

The second reason is that it’s tough to keep plugging away with a topic you don’t care about. Especially in conjunction with the learning curve a new person has. And if you are creating a product instead of just affiliate marketing? You better be interested.

The disconnect comes in to play when you think that picking something that your personally passionate about negates the need for market research. It doesn’t!

It’s vital to make sure your niche market has customers-and hopefully they are as passionate as you! If the passion you chose for your internet marketing project isn’t a viable market…move on to the next item on your list.

Passion is very important, and can(and should) fuel your business. But don’t allow yourself to forget that this is still a business. Apply right action to your passions, and you’ll go far.

When I decided to make this post, I had planned on linking to a PDF report that one of my mentors wrote on the topic of passion. However, he posted the report himself on the warrior discussion that prompted this. So I urge you to take a look at the thread, and download the PDF posted by Dr. Mani. He is one of the good guys, and you’re sure to learn a lot.
